NZCIS - Campus-wide integration

Located in Upper Hutt, the 18ha NZ Campus of Innovation and Sport is a world-class facility providing conferencing, accommodation, commercial office spaces, and home to the impressive Performance Institute, catering to the training needs of the world’s elite sports people.

Automation Associates Commercial was engaged by telecommunications giant, NTT who specialise in enterprise voice capability (such as IT, server, networking and telephony) and help clients move confidently into their digital future.

NTT chose Automation Associates Commercial as their partner for front-end technology at NZCIS that assists athletes to perfect their art through technology that provides immediate feedback, tracking and response, to target specific development.

The distinct areas across the Campus encompass the Athletes’ Village, the Performance Institute, and Team Administration areas, as well as 4 highly manicured outdoor playing fields.

The overarching brief was to achieve a campus-wide integrated system, where audio and video streams are sent over the campus network, and to give control of the technology to users in each area.

One of the key deliverables for Automation Associates was to create a consistent look and feel across all technologies on campus, be brag worthy, look great, feel good and create emotion, and display the professionalism expected from the world’s sports elites, whilst working within budget.

Part of that professionalism meant delivering a system with absolute reliability of technology, that was simple and intuitive for a transient visitor to operate.

With no physical signage, this fully white-labelled digital facility allows NZCIS staff to configure and customise campus-wide digital signage for visiting teams and organisations, ensuring consistent logos and messaging throughout the entire venue.

Athletes Village

Visiting Athletes enjoy the Athletes Village which houses a communal amenities block, with lounge, kitchen, games room, dining hall, open areas and 50 accommodation units. These areas sport an array of technology for delivering audio and video content, customisable and personalised digital signage messages, such as welcome statements, team logos and messaging, that meet the training and media requirements of each team, and make it feel like the ‘team home’.

Teams can bring their own devices, plug in and control displays and audio.  Technology can also be controlled via 7” touch panels or simple intuitive remote controls in the accommodation units.

 

Performance Institute

The Performance Institute is the jewel in the NZCIS crown.  This huge building is the training center of campus.  Reception welcomes with a 130” LED wall, and controls displays and audio via a tabletop touch panel.

Background music, audio and video control features throughout physio and doctor’s rooms, changing rooms, coaching office and meeting rooms, and specialty areas such as the Cycle Studio room, gyms and observation room, Recovery Room, and pools.  Data analysis and diagnostics are computed and can be sent to displays in any of the areas.

The pièce de resistance is the indoor sports field, with two 5×3 meter video walls.  The field can be divided into 2 discrete zones, with control over displays and audio in each area.

One of the challenges faced in this area was to provide an effective audio-visual solution for an enormous space which would engage the audience and meet the expectations of the world’s best rugby and football professionals.  This meant attending to echo and ambient light on the huge screens.

Automation Associates has also integrated with the giant 9m high x 7.5m wide LED wall at the indoor sports field, giving staff the ability to send content and messaging to third party technology.

Design documentation, including floorplans, elevations and wiring diagrams were created for every space, with project management and installation services provided by the Automation Associates Commercial team.

A variety of Crestron Flex technology solutions were implemented depending on room size and use.

Microsoft Certified Meeting Rooms (MTR) is the platform on which the Crestron systems operate.

Crestron Tabletop Conferencing Systems, Logitech Conference Camera systems and Crestron Desk phones are installed throughout Fonterra’s nationwide meeting rooms in this refreshment project.

Most rooms also include single or dual 55”, 60”, 65” and/or 70” 4K ultra-high definition displays.

Whatever the size, a consistent user interface is maintained across all rooms to ensure ease of use and smooth device interconnectivity, allowing staff to connect effortlessly across the globe.

The workplace technology is managed by Creston XiO Cloud licensing, delivering one unifying operations platform achieving simple monitoring and management of every room in every location.
