We started wondering: do people really want a dedicated home golf sim, or are they more likely to want a multi-functional space – rumpus room by day, movie theatre by night, golf simulator whenever the mood strikes? Sounds easy enough: just integrate a golf sim into a home theatre, right? Ha. Cue our epic journey of research, trial, and minor golf-related despair. What followed felt like a real-life Pick-a-Path adventure – every choice opening up three new ones, few that ended in the golf-sim of our dreams.

Step 1: Launch Monitors – Easier Said Than Done

Online, launch monitors start under $1,000… and climb past $50,000. Then you factor in your New Zealand location, and suddenly your options shrink by 60% while costs double. Add in left-handed golfing friends (the only ones truly in their right mind – see what we did there?) and you’re right back in that Pick-a-Path maze.

We begged, borrowed, and tested every model we could get our hands on – and even roped in a golf pro to verify what “a slight hook with a 7 iron carrying 140m” should look like.

Step 2: The Impact Screen and Panels – More Than Meets the Eye

Temu hitting mats? Trash. Pro mats? Excellent… but pricey. And don’t get us started on the visual horror of a bright green square in an otherwise elegant multi-use space.

We tested nine different turf styles and countless underlay combinations to get the perfect feel – realistic, quiet, and safe. The goal: no trampoline bounce, no chequerboard seams, no concrete-hard hits. Just a surface that plays beautifully, looks integrated, and won’t have you tripping on joins.

Step 4: The DIY Reality Check

All those “budget-friendly DIY golf sim” videos? Let’s just say they left out a few hundred steps (and dollars). We tried the shortcuts, read the reviews, and learned the hard way: most online setups are based on products you can’t even get in New Zealand.

Between shipping, compatibility, and endless micro-adjustments, the “cheap” route cost more in time, money, and sanity than we care to admit. The good news? We made the mistakes so you don’t have to.
