McCahon House - Interactive Display Cabinets

Interactive, immersive display cabinets – bringing content to life.

McCahon House – Interactive Display Cabinet Installation

Colin McCahon House, the 1950s home of Colin McCahon, New Zealand’s most significant modern painter, is now a museum and artist residence.

The Museum demonstrates how preserving both artworks and the environment in which they were created can reveal the artist’s process and intent. Inspired by this approach, we were invited by Architect Rick Pearson to consult on the transformation of the existing display cabinets into interactive, immersive units to bring the existing content to life.

Automation Associates was then engaged by the Museum Trust to upgrade the visual and audio displays located in multiple cabinets around the museum to a modern standard and update the LED content lighting system.

The cabinets combine visuals, audio, lighting, and user-triggered interaction to create a seamless, responsive and engaging experience for visitors.

The project began with a mock-up installation of a single cabinet. This proof-of-concept stage allowed the Trust to confirm that the design would suit their requirements around functionality, user interaction, and the overall approach prior to rolling the update out across the remaining cabinets.

Each cabinet now functions as a fully integrated, self-contained interactive unit. The design responds intuitively to user interaction, highlights the display contents with high definition visuals and sound delivered by comfortable full range handheld exhibit speaker creating a cohesive and immersive experience.
